What Doc Says:
"As soon as I got these in stock I gave one to my Father in law (Grampy) to put to the test. He's had a Stroke and can only use the left side of his body. If you came here because you met him and tried the stik and he's given you a card. Don't worry, he's not on commision!
When I gave him the Slik-Stik the first question was "Is it any good for me, I'm left handed?"
We now know that although it was designed for Right Handers, it's as usable for Lefties because the Light Button is easily pressed by the Forefinger as opposed to the Righties using their Thumb.
While out on a coach trip it drew a crowd of admirers and everyone wanted to have a go. Everyone agrees the handle is very comfortable and Ergonomic, much nicer to use than the Wooden handle he's used to and does give him pain on long walks. When I say long walks, I'm talking Yards not Miles, he puts all of his weight on the sick as he needs it for balance so his left hand gets quite sore. He says this is much more comfortable, time will tell (I'll have to get him on a long walk)
Cranking the Handle is easy when you have two hands, not so much when you have only one hand, but Grampy wouldn't give up. He wound it for a few minutes by hooking his good leg over the stick and turning the handle, we all agreed he'd be better off just using the charger instead as it was definatly not designed for a One handed Leftie. However, his missus (Nanny) who has bad hands could do it no problem, she's right handed.
It does come with a charger, so it's a good idea to put the stik on charge before you take it out, then you don't Have to site there winding it up. The Charger will save your wrists I'm sure. But hey, when you're away from the mains, you'll be glad you can wind it up!
When the SlikStik arrived the battery was not charged and after one minute of cranking we had feeble light, but when we gave it 90 minutes charge using the Mains Adaptor we had VERY Bright light . You press the button once for the Torch to come on, press again for the torch and the flashing red lights on the side of the stick, press again for off.
About the Magnet in the Top of Handle.
When walking with the Stick the Magnet is under the palm of your hand, but when Grampy needed to pick up my set of keys, it worked a treat, we were Really Impressed with the Strength of the Magnet as my Bunch of Keys is Heavy (Has 12 Keys, a Victorinox Camper Knife, a Small Torch and a UV Keyring)
When it comes to the Personal Alarm or Emergency Siren, whatever you want to call it, the switch is at the back of the handle. So it rests under the heel of your thumb if right handed or level with the little finger if you're left handed.
Because of its position, it's not going to activate by accident (SEE NOTE) and this is a blessing as it's really quite loud. We tried the alarm siren with the telly on and Jane took it outside to see if we could hear it through double glazing. We could hear it over the One Show which was an improvement.
NOTE: My test user has found an interesting Function quite by accident :. When the Slik-Stik is dropped to the Ground, the Alarm Goes Off!
This is a godsend to Grampy who does have a habit of dropping to the ground himself and has been known to spend time down there, until someone spots him and helps him up. At least now when he's down, he can make himself heard and get help. Of course he could switch this on himself, but what if the user is having a Seizure? The Slik-Stik seems to go off on its own when it hits the ground. I'd say that was a Bonus and one I'm not sure if it's intended, I'll find out!
When I get the chance we will take some Pictures of Grampy modelling the slik stik and answer a few more questions we have over time.
Does it float? Is it Water proof? At what height can you drop it before it stops working?
Have you got any questions you can think of? Ask and I'll find out and put the answers here. I hope you have found this useful and I'll say one last thing:
Yes, I know what you're thinking, is it worth nearly 40 quid? When you consider the functions and that it's the first of it's kind. The Build quality is really very good and it does what it says on the tin. 40 quid is 40 quid and you have to ask yourself a question: For the sake of a few quid, do I want to find myself (or my loved one) in a position where we find ourself thinking "Dagnamit, I should have got one of those slik stiks because: I can't see where I'm going / No one knows I'm on the floor / This traffic can't see me / I can't reach my keys "
If in Doubt: Remember the GlowGadgets 30 Days No Quibble Satisfaction Guarantee, Buy it, Love it or Return it.
Safety and Being Seen as well as Heard.
The Slik-Stik has flashing (or is it Blinking?) Red Lights down the side of its shaft, giving 360 degree visibilty to oncoming traffic.
You can charge the battery using a mains adaptor (included) or by winding. Because the Winding motor is Brushless, it's a lot easier to wind than most and after a Minute of winding you'll get 90 minutes of blinking or (I'm guessing) 10 minutes of torch light.

What the Manufacturers Say:
The SLIK-STIK™ is the brainchild of Baylis Next Generation protégé, Denise Anstey, a disabled lady who was dissatisfied with the poor ergonomics and basic function of conventional walking sticks.

The Slik-Stik™ folds for convenient storage and portability, whilst maintaining a firm and rigid support when extended. A four - position stem adjusts easily to your preferred height while the comfortable and well designed hand grip has a rubberised non-slip coating.
The front of the hand grip incorporates a super bright LED torch light which shines a forward beam and a foot-fall floodlight to ensure safe footing at night on pavements, steps, and other trip hazards. The rear of the handle incorporates a built in panic alarm that can be activated to alert for help.

A further press on the control button provides high intensity red LED strobe lights located down the shaft of the stick, adding safety and security when walking near to traffic or crossing roads.
Better still, the above functions do NOT require the use of disposable batteries therefore ensuring an Eco-Friendly product. Even though the hand grip has a superb ergonomic and compact profile, the engineers at BAYLIS have skilfully incorporated their latest state-of-the-art induction generator system inside. A minute winding of the retractable handle is sufficient to provide several minutes of emergency illumination, whilst the included mains charger will fully re-charge the system in around three hours.
Finally, one further frustration for Denise has been addressed by the handy inclusion of a strong pick-up magnet in the handle - just in case you drop those keys again, and there’s a convenient wrist strap for portability.
Another BAYLIS winner!
